What Is the BYD Seal U?
The BYD Seal U is the European version of the BYD Song Plus EV, a compact crossover SUV that sells hundreds of thousands of units annually in China. The "U" stands for "Utility" and positions this model within the Seal family, alongside the BYD Seal sedan.
BYD (Build Your Dreams) is the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturer, outselling even Tesla in total EV units. The Seal U represents one of their most important models for the European market offensive.
It launched in Europe in February 2024 with two variants: Comfort (71.8 kWh) and Design (87 kWh). There's also a PHEV version called Seal U DM-i, but we're focusing on the pure electric (BEV) variant here.

The Comfort version qualifies for Greece's "Kinoumai Ilektriko 3" subsidy program. With the subsidy, the price can drop below €27,000 — making it one of the most affordable electric SUVs in Greece!
BYD Seal U Design & Practicality
At 4,785mm long, 1,890mm wide, and with a 2,765mm wheelbase, the Seal U is a proper family SUV. The space is impressive — particularly in the rear seats where three adults can travel comfortably.
The design is deliberately understated — unlike the more "aggressive" SUVs from competitors. This could be an advantage if you prefer a car that doesn't draw too much attention but still looks modern.
Interior & Technology Features
Inside, BYD follows a "tech-first" philosophy. The highlights:

What You Need to Watch Out For
No car is perfect. Things you need to consider:
- DC charging speed: DC fast charging speed isn't officially listed as top-tier — expect around 100-120 kW, significantly slower than Tesla (250 kW) or Hyundai (240 kW)
- Service network: BYD is still building its after-sales network in Greece. Check if there's an authorized service center near you
- Infotainment: While functional, it doesn't quite reach Tesla or Hyundai levels in UX
- Resale value: As a new brand in Europe, resale value isn't yet proven
- 0-100 in 9.6s: Not sporty — but for a family SUV it's perfectly adequate
