What Is the BYD Seal U?
The BYD Seal U is the European version of the BYD Song Plus EV, a compact crossover SUV that sells hundreds of thousands of units in China every year. The “U” in the name stands for “Utility” and positions the model within the Seal family, alongside the BYD Seal sedan.
BYD (Build Your Dreams) is the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturer, surpassing even Tesla in sales volume. The Seal U is one of the most important models for the company's European expansion.
It has been available in Europe since February 2024 in two versions: Comfort (71.8 kWh) and Design (87 kWh). There is also the PHEV variant Seal U DM-i, but here we focus on the fully electric (BEV) version.
Did You Know?
BYD sold over 1 million Song Plus units worldwide by July 2024! The company was originally a battery manufacturer before entering the automotive industry.
Blade Battery: The Hidden Advantage
One of the biggest advantages of the Seal U is BYD's Blade Battery technology. It's an LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery with a unique design:
Safety
The Blade Battery passed the “nail penetration test” without catching fire — something conventional NMC batteries cannot do. Exceptional thermal stability.
Longevity
LFP batteries endure 3,000+ charge cycles (vs 1,000-2,000 for NMC). This means the battery will outlast the car's lifespan by a significant margin.
The Blade Battery is also cheaper to produce (no cobalt or nickel required), more environmentally friendly, and partly explains why BYD can offer the Seal U at such a competitive price.

Note on Pricing
The Comfort version qualifies for the "Kinoume Ilektrika 3″ subsidy program. With the subsidy, the price can drop below €27,000 — making it one of the most affordable electric SUVs in Greece!
Design & Practicality
At 4,785 mm long, 1,890 mm wide, and with a 2,765 mm wheelbase, the Seal U is a true family SUV. The interior space is impressive — especially in the rear seats where three adults can travel comfortably.
The design is deliberately understated — in contrast to the more “aggressive” SUVs from competitors. This can be an advantage if you prefer a car that doesn't draw too much attention but still looks modern.
Interior & Technology
Inside, BYD follows a “tech-first” philosophy. The highlights:
- Rotating 12.8″ display: It can switch from portrait to landscape — a unique BYD feature
- DiLink system: With karaoke function, app store, and full connectivity
- Digital instrument cluster: Full LCD instrument panel
- V2L (Vehicle-to-Load): You can power electrical devices from the car
The materials are appropriate for the price category, though they don't reach the premium levels of BMW or Mercedes. The dashboard design is modern and functional.
Safety: 5-Star Euro NCAP
One of the most important points: the BYD Seal U achieved 5 stars in the Euro NCAP crash test. In detail:
These numbers place the Seal U on the same safety level as much more expensive European models. BYD doesn't cut corners on safety.
Competition: The Big Picture
| BYD Seal U | Tesla Model Y | Hyundai Kona | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Range | 500 km | 575 km | 484 km |
| Battery | 87 kWh LFP | 80 kWh NMC | 65 kWh NMC |
| Battery warranty | 8 years | 8 years | 8 years |
| Price (est.) | ~€33.000 | ~€40.000 | ~€36.000 |
The BYD Seal U clearly wins on value for money. It offers a Tiguan-sized SUV, with a large battery, 5-star safety rating, at the price of a compact car.
What to Watch Out For
No car is perfect. Things you should keep in mind:
- DC Charging: The DC charging speed isn't officially listed as top-tier — expected around 100-120 kW, considerably lower than Tesla (250 kW) or Hyundai (240 kW)
- Service network: BYD is still building its after-sales network in Greece. Check if there's an authorized service center near you
- Infotainment: While functional, it doesn't yet match the UX levels of Tesla or Hyundai
- Resale value: As a new brand in Europe, resale value is not yet well-established
- 0-100 in 9.6s: Not sporty — but perfectly adequate for a family SUV
Verdict: Is It Worth It?
Pros
- Excellent price
- Long range (500 km)
- Blade Battery safety
- 5⭐ Euro NCAP
- Spacious interior
- V2L capability
Cons
- Slow DC charging
- Infotainment needs improvement
- Limited service network
- Uncertain resale value
- Slow 0-100
Verdict
The BYD Seal U is the top value-for-money choice among electric SUVs today. With 500 km range, 87 kWh Blade Battery, 5-star Euro NCAP, and a price under €35,000, it offers things that no European or American model can match at this price. If the still-developing after-sales competition doesn't concern you, it's well worth serious consideration.
