Lords of the Fallen (2023): The Foundation
The 2023 Lords of the Fallen, developed by Hexworks and published by CI Games, was the reboot/sequel of the 2014 original. Built on Unreal Engine 5, it presented a world several times larger than the first, with the unique dual-world system as its central mechanic.
The dual-world system — Axiom (the realm of the living) and Umbral (the realm of the dead) — was the most innovative element of the game. Through the Umbral Lamp, players could transition between realms, uncovering hidden paths and secrets that existed only in one of the two worlds.

What Worked and What Needs Improvement
Lords of the Fallen (2023) had clear strengths: the combat system was satisfying, the dual-world system was inventive, and the magic system was described as “a genuine improvement over other soulslikes in almost every way” by PC Gamer. The boss battles, particularly against humanoid bosses, were exceptional.
On the other hand, criticism focused on unstable launch performance, lack of engaging storytelling ("no relatable characters to latch onto," according to GamesRadar), and excessive difficulty in certain areas. The version 2.0 update (April 2025) fixed many issues: improved co-op, reduced difficulty, new character creator, and more tutorials.

Lords of the Fallen II: What We Know
In August 2025, CI Games officially announced Lords of the Fallen II for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with a scheduled release in 2026. After the experience of the first game and the 4+ million players who tried it, Hexworks now has a massive volume of feedback to improve every aspect.
The lessons from the first game are clear:
- Better performance: The 2023 launch had issues — the sequel needs to run flawlessly
- More engaging story: More relatable characters, better narrative
- Dual-world evolution: The Axiom/Umbral system has enormous room for growth
- Balanced difficulty: Challenge without excessive frustration
The Lore of Mournstead
The Lords of the Fallen universe is a dark fantasy scenario with gods in conflict: the dark god Adyr and his demonic Rhogar against the god of light Orius and the Hallowed Sentinels. The first game offered three different endings (Radiant, Inferno, Umbral), each with serious consequences for the world.
The sequel will need to answer critical questions: Which ending is canon? What happened to the Putrid Mother? Who is the new enemy? Hexworks has the opportunity to deepen Mournstead's mythology and create an even richer world.
Three Endings, Infinite Possibilities
The first game had 3 endings: Radiant (victory over Adyr, Orius reigns), Inferno (Adyr returns to power) and Umbral (the Putrid Mother devours everything). Each opens different narrative directions for the sequel.
Expectations for 2026
With the $66.2 million budget of the first game and its record-breaking sales success, it's certain CI Games will invest even more in the sequel. Lords of the Fallen II has all the prerequisites to become the soulslike that seriously rivals FromSoftware — as long as Hexworks listens to the community and delivers a more stable, more narrative-driven, and more polished title.
