The original Subnautica was a one-of-a-kind experience — alone on an alien ocean, surviving and exploring depths filled with terror and beauty. Now, Subnautica 2 brings that same magic but with a massive change: co-op for up to 4 players. New planet, new creatures, DNA modification, and Unreal Engine 5. This is the sequel we've been waiting for.

New Planet, New Threats
Subnautica 2 is set on an entirely new planet — not planet 4546B from the first game. New creatures, new environments, new vehicles. The cinematic trailer showed a current mechanic that can drag you to other areas — adding a layer of unpredictability to exploration.
Co-op Up to 4 Players
For the first time in the series, you can explore the ocean with friends. Single-player remains an option for purists.

No Microtransactions, No Battle Pass
When Krafton mentioned the term “live-service” in a February 2024 financial report, fans reacted strongly. Unknown Worlds clarified immediately: no subscriptions, no loot boxes, no battle pass, no microtransactions. This was reaffirmed after the leadership changes in July 2025.
Dramatic Leadership Changes
In July 2025, Krafton replaced CEO Ted Gill and co-founders Charlie Cleveland and Max McGuire with Steve Papoutsis (formerly of Striking Distance Studios / The Callisto Protocol). The original leadership filed a lawsuit against Krafton — the firings came months before a $250 million bonus that would have activated with the Early Access launch.

From 2022 to 2026
The game was announced in April 2022. Originally scheduled for 2025, it was delayed to 2026 due to the leadership changes. The cinematic trailer dropped on October 17, 2024 during the Xbox Partner Showcase. In April 2025, dev blogs started with early gameplay footage, and in July 2025 the gameplay trailer arrived alongside the delay announcement.

Why We Can't Wait
Subnautica 2 promises to keep the soul of the original — that sense of wonder and the deep-sea terror — while adding co-op, DNA modification, and a gorgeous UE5 world. Despite the development drama, the promise of ethical monetization and the ability to explore the depths with friends make Subnautica 2 one of the most anticipated survival games of 2026.
