What Is The Duskbloods?
Revealed during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, The Duskbloods marks a bold departure for FromSoftware. Instead of yet another single-player action RPG, the Japanese studio presents a PvPvE (Player vs Player vs Environment) game for 8 players, emphasizing gothic combat and strategic team-based action.
The game takes place in a dark fantasy world where players embody the Bloodsworn — warriors who “transcended human strength thanks to their special blood.” The reference to blood as a source of power immediately recalls the Blood Echoes mechanic from Bloodborne, although FromSoftware states this is an entirely new direction.
Gameplay: PvPvE in FromSoftware's DNA
The transition from pure single-player games to a PvPvE format isn't as unexpected as it might seem. FromSoftware has always embedded multiplayer elements into their games — from Dark Souls invasions to Elden Ring's cooperative boss fights. The Duskbloods simply brings that philosophy to the forefront.
In the PvPvE format, 8 players don't simply fight each other. Simultaneously, they face environmental forces — monsters, boss encounters, traps — creating chaotic yet strategic situations. Think of it as an Elden Ring invasion event, but designed from the ground up around that experience.
Multiplayer Focus
8-player PvPvE. Fight enemies and rivals simultaneously in dark arenas.
Blood Mechanics

The Bloodsworn: Warriors of Blood
The world of The Duskbloods is inhabited by the Bloodsworn — beings who managed to transcend human limitations thanks to their “special blood.” This blood grants them supernatural abilities but also condemns them to a life of eternal combat.
FromSoftware is renowned for powerful storytelling through the game world — environmental storytelling — rather than traditional cutscenes. In The Duskbloods, each Bloodsworn character is expected to represent a different faction or blood type, with unique abilities, playstyle, and backstory.
Why This Exclusivity Matters
FromSoftware making an exclusive game for Nintendo is a historic event. The company has been primarily associated with Sony (Demon's Souls, Bloodborne) and PC/multiplatform releases (Dark Souls, Elden Ring). The choice of Switch 2 as the exclusive platform signals two things:
- Hardware confidence — FromSoftware believes Switch 2 can run a demanding action game to their standards.
- System seller deal — Nintendo needed a “hardcore” exclusive to attract core gamers to Switch 2.
- New audience — FromSoftware gains access to Nintendo's massive user base, many of whom may never have tried Soulslike games.
- Creative freedom — A new IP on a new platform gives freedom to experiment with radically different ideas.

FromSoftware: A History of Masterpieces
To understand why The Duskbloods is so significant, it's worth examining FromSoftware's trajectory. Under the direction of Hidetaka Miyazaki, the company has transformed the entire gaming industry:
- Demon's Souls (2009) — Created an entire genre (Soulslike). PS3 exclusive.
- Dark Souls (2011) — Established the formula. Multiplatform hit.
- Bloodborne (2015) — Faster, more aggressive. PS4 exclusive, considered a masterpiece.
- Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (2019) — Game of the Year. New combat direction.
- Elden Ring (2022) — Open world meets Souls. Over 25 million sales.
- Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree (2024) — DLC so big it felt like its own game.
- The Duskbloods (2026) — New IP. PvPvE. Switch 2 exclusive.
What We Don't Know Yet
Despite the excitement, many questions remain unanswered. FromSoftware hasn't revealed many details yet:
Open Questions
- Will there be a single-player mode or is it exclusively multiplayer?
- How many Bloodsworn characters will be available?
- Will there be an RPG-style progression system or match-based gameplay?
- Free-to-play or premium pricing?
- Will it require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription?
- Exact release date within 2026?
- Will it eventually come to other platforms?
FromSoftware is known for minimal pre-release reveals — remember how little we saw of Elden Ring before launch. We expect more information at upcoming gaming events throughout 2026.
First Impressions
The Duskbloods may be the biggest surprise of the Switch 2 reveal. A FromSoftware new IP, exclusive to Nintendo hardware, with PvPvE gameplay — it's a combination nobody expected. If FromSoftware can translate their punishing, fair, addictive combat into a multiplayer format, The Duskbloods could become the definitive “system seller” for Switch 2.
Only time will tell whether FromSoftware can prove that their multiplayer expertise — which has existed for years within Souls games but was never the main focus — can stand as a standalone experience. The signs suggest the answer will be positive.
