Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is back with a bang — this time on the Nintendo Switch 2 with 4K resolution and 60fps. Originally released on Wii U (2015) and remastered for Switch (March 2025), the Switch 2 edition landed on February 19, 2026. With a Metacritic score of 87/100 and OpenCritic at 97%, this is one of the finest open-world JRPGs ever made.

Story: Humanity on Mira
In the year 2054, Earth is destroyed in the crossfire of an alien war. Humanity escapes aboard spacecraft — one of them being the White Whale, which carries the city of New Los Angeles (NLA). After two years of travel, the White Whale crash-lands on the mysterious planet Mira.
The player creates their own avatar who's awakened from a lifepod with no memories, rescued by Elma — the leader of BLADE (Builders of the Legacy After the Destruction of Earth). The mission: recover scattered colonists, explore Mira's 5 continents, and uncover the planet's secrets.

Gameplay: Skells and Open World
Xenoblade Chronicles X is an open-world action RPG with command-based combat. You start on foot, but in the latter half of the game you gain access to Skells — transformable mechs that can walk, drive, and (eventually) fly.

The Definitive Edition (March 2025) is more than a simple remaster. It includes:

Switch 2 Edition: 4K and 60fps
On February 19, 2026, Nintendo digitally released the Switch 2 Edition. Existing Definitive Edition owners can upgrade for a small fee. The highlights:

Hiroyuki Sawano's Soundtrack
The renowned Japanese composer — known for Attack on Titan, Kill la Kill and Gundam Unicorn — created an epic 55-track soundtrack. For the Definitive Edition, he returned alongside Misaki Umase to compose new pieces.

The Team Behind Mira
Monolith Soft, led by Tetsuya Takahashi (creator of the Xeno series since 1999), developed the game after completing Xenoblade Chronicles (2010). Executive Director Takahashi, Directors Koh Kojima and Genki Yokota. Development began as a sci-fi RPG for Wii U — Monolith Soft's first HD console title.
An interesting detail: the original script had a set main character, but the introduction of online mode led to a complete rewrite for a player-created avatar. The original protagonist and a proposed villain (the “Black Knight”) were cut — the latter makes a cameo appearance in the post-credits.
Reviews and Legacy
The Definitive Edition earned stellar reviews: 10/10 from Nintendo Life, 9/10 from IGN, 4/5 from Eurogamer. The world, combat system, Skells, and quality-of-life improvements received exceptional praise. The story was considered middling compared to other Xenoblade entries, but the gameplay improvements more than compensate.
The X engine and architecture served as the foundation for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (2017). Both Takahashi and Kojima have publicly expressed their desire to develop Xenoblade Chronicles X2.
