Half-Life: Alyx Review - The Revolutionary VR Game That Changed Everything

📅 January 31, 2026 ✍️ GReverse Tech Team ⏱️ 7 min read

It's been 6 years since its release and still no VR game has surpassed it. Half-Life: Alyx isn't just a good VR game - it's proof that VR can deliver experiences that are impossible on flat screens. If you have a VR headset and haven't played it, you're missing out.

Masterpiece
The benchmark for every VR game that follows

In March 2020, Valve did something nobody expected: they released a new Half-Life game. Not Half-Life 3, but something equally significant - a full-length AAA VR game that showed what the medium can truly deliver.

13 years after Half-Life 2: Episode 2, Valve returned to City 17. But this time, you're not looking through a screen - you're inside the world. And that changes everything.

The Story: A Half-Life 2 Prequel

Alyx is set 5 years before the events of Half-Life 2. You play as Alyx Vance, 19 years old, a member of the resistance against the Combine. Together with her father Eli, they're trying to liberate Earth from the alien occupation.

The mission begins when the Combine capture Eli. Alyx must infiltrate the Quarantine Zone of City 17 - a forbidden zone filled with Zombies, Headcrabs, and Combine soldiers - to rescue him.

Without spoilers: the story has one of the best endings in gaming history. If you're a Half-Life fan, it will leave you speechless. If you haven't played the previous games, the game explains enough for you to understand what's happening.

Why Is It So Good?

🖐️

Physics-Based Interaction

Everything is interactive. You open drawers, turn valves, throw objects at enemies. Every object has weight and physics. You don't press a button - you do it with your hands.

🔫

Combat That Feels Real

You aim with your hand, not a mouse. You manually reload your weapon. You physically duck behind cover. Every fight feels intense because you are there.

👻

Terrifying Without Being Horror

The Headcrabs that lunge at your face. The Zombies that crawl in the dark. Jeff - a level that will make you hold your breath. Genuine tension.

🎨

Incredible Graphics

Even 6 years later, Alyx is one of the most beautiful VR games. Valve's Source 2 engine works wonders. Every environment is packed with detail.

🧩

Clever Puzzles

The puzzles were designed for VR. You need to look around you, manipulate objects, think in three dimensions. It's not “press E to solve” - these are real puzzles.

⏱️

15+ Hours of Gameplay

Full-length AAA experience. Not a 2-3 hour demo - a real, complete game with a beginning, middle, and end. Every minute is polished.

The Gravity Gloves: Game Changer

Gravity Gloves Mechanic - Pull objects toward you like a Jedi

One of the smartest design decisions is the Gravity Gloves. Instead of walking up to every object to pick it up, you simply point and “pull” it toward you. The object flies through the air and you catch it.

This solves a huge VR problem: locomotion. You don't need to constantly move around to collect ammo or health. And it's incredibly satisfying - you feel like a Jedi.

Jeff: The Best Level in VR History

Horror in VR - The Headcrabs will make you jump out of your chair

There's one chapter everyone remembers: Jeff. Without saying too much, it's a stealth level where you must avoid a monster that can't see but hears everything.

You have to cover your mouth when you cough (in-game). Throw bottles to distract it. Walk slowly so you don't make noise. It's terrifying, innovative, and unforgettable.

💡 Fun Fact

During development, Valve discovered that testers were literally holding their breath during the Jeff level. VR is so immersive that the brain reacts as if the danger is real.

The Best VR Experience - Ideal setup for Half-Life: Alyx

Alyx is playable on all major PCVR headsets:

  • Valve Index - The optimal experience, finger tracking
  • Meta Quest 2/3 - Via Link cable or Air Link
  • HTC Vive Pro 2 - Excellent resolution
  • HP Reverb G2 - Best visual clarity
  • Pico 4 - Via Virtual Desktop or PCVR streaming
  • Bigscreen Beyond - Compact & comfortable

Important: You need a gaming PC. Alyx doesn't run natively on Quest - you must connect to a PC.

How to Play It with Quest 3

  1. Buy the game on Steam (€50 or wait for a sale)
  2. Connect your Quest via Link cable or use Air Link
  3. Launch SteamVR on your computer
  4. Start Alyx from your Steam library

For the best wireless experience, use Virtual Desktop instead of Air Link - it has better compression and lower latency.

Mods: Infinite Replayability

Valve released modding tools, and the community has created amazing content:

  • Levitation - Entirely new campaign, 4-5 hours
  • Return to Rapture - BioShock-inspired mod
  • Gunman Contracts - John Wick-style action
  • C17YS - New campaign in City 17

Mods are available on the Steam Workshop and can be installed with a single click. They add dozens of hours of extra gameplay for free.

Why Has No Game Surpassed It?

6 years later, why does Alyx remain at the top?

Budget & Time: Valve had unlimited resources and time. No other studio can dedicate 5+ years to a VR-only game.

Talent: Valve has some of the best game designers in the world. Alyx was designed by people who know how to craft memorable experiences.

VR-First Design: It's not a port from a flat game. Every mechanic was designed for VR from the ground up. That makes a huge difference.

Source 2 Engine: Valve has its own engine, optimized for VR. No need to wrestle with Unreal or Unity limitations.

🏆 The Verdict

Half-Life: Alyx isn't just the best VR game - it's one of the best games ever made, period. If you have a VR headset and a gaming PC, you must play it. It's the experience that justifies buying VR equipment. Masterpiece 10/10.
