📱 What Is eSIM & How It Works
eSIM (embedded SIM) is a tiny chip permanently built into your device. Instead of getting a plastic SIM card from a store, you download a digital profile via QR code or through an app. No physical tray, no snapping plastic — just software.
eSIM technology is based on the GSMA Remote SIM Provisioning standard. Each eSIM chip can store multiple carrier profiles — for example, one Cosmote profile for Greece and a local eSIM for travel. You can switch between them without physically removing anything.
eSIM Advantages
- No physical SIM tray needed
- Activate in minutes from home
- Multiple carrier profiles on one device
- Ideal for dual SIM (eSIM + physical)
- Can't be lost or broken
- More secure (can't be removed)
eSIM Limitations
- Not easily transferred between devices
- Requires internet for activation
- Some budget devices don't support it
- Depends on carrier (some are slower)
- Factory reset = must reinstall profile
📋 Compatible Devices in Greece 2026
Nearly every flagship smartphone from 2020 onward supports eSIM. But you need to check both the device AND the carrier:
📱 eSIM Compatibility by Manufacturer
| Manufacturer | eSIM Models | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Apple | iPhone XS and newer | iPhone 16: 2 eSIM no physical slot (US). EU: nano + eSIM |
| Samsung | Galaxy S21+ and newer | Galaxy S26: dual eSIM. Flip/Fold: eSIM ready |
| Pixel 3a and newer | Pixel 9: dual eSIM. Full support | |
| Xiaomi | Xiaomi 14 and newer | Flagship series only. Redmi: usually no |
| OnePlus | OnePlus 12 and newer | Recent support addition |
| Apple Watch | Series 3 GPS+Cellular+ | Only Cosmote supports Watch eSIM in Greece |
| iPad | iPad Pro 2018+, Air 2019+ | Cellular models only |
💡 How to Check If Your Device Supports eSIM
- iPhone: Settings → General → About → if you see “Available eSIM” it's supported
- Android: Settings → Network → SIM cards → if there's an “Add eSIM” option it's supported
- Alternative: Note your IMEI (*#06#) and ask your carrier if eSIM is supported
🇬🇷 eSIM with Greek Carriers
All three major carriers (Cosmote, Vodafone, Nova) support eSIM, but with different procedures:
🇬🇷 eSIM by Carrier — February 2026
| Criterion | Cosmote | Vodafone | Nova |
|---|---|---|---|
| eSIM Support | ✓ Full | ✓ Full | ✓ Full |
| Online Activation | My Cosmote App | My Vodafone App | My Nova App |
| QR Code In-Store | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Conversion Cost | Free | Free | Free |
| Apple Watch eSIM | Yes (€5/mo) | Not yet | Not yet |
| Prepaid eSIM | Yes | Yes | Limited |
| Activation Time | ~2 minutes | ~3 minutes | ~5 minutes |
Cosmote has the most complete eSIM features — the only carrier with Apple Watch eSIM in Greece. Vodafone follows closely with excellent online activation. Nova supports eSIM but prepaid eSIM is still limited.
🔧 Step-by-Step eSIM Activation
The activation process is nearly identical across all carriers. Follow these steps:
Connect to Wi-Fi
Make sure you're connected to Wi-Fi. eSIM activation requires an internet connection — it cannot be done offline.
Open Carrier App
Open My Cosmote / My Vodafone / My Nova app. Navigate to the “eSIM” or “SIM Card” section. Select “Convert to eSIM”.
Identity Verification
The carrier will request identity verification — usually via SMS code or video call. This is mandatory under EETT regulations.
Receive QR Code
You'll receive a QR code via email or it will appear in the app. You can also visit a physical store for a printed QR code card.
Scan QR on Device
iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Scan QR. Android: Settings → SIM Cards → Add eSIM → Scan.
Activate & Configure
After downloading the profile, name your line (e.g., “Cosmote”, “Personal”). Set which line is used for calls/data.
⚠️ Important: QR Code Precautions
- Each QR code is used ONCE — if you scan on the wrong device, request a new one
- Don't screenshot the QR code — it's not secure
- If you switch devices, you need to request a new eSIM profile
- Factory reset = you lose the eSIM — re-download will be needed
🔄 Switching from Physical SIM to eSIM
Switching from a physical SIM to eSIM is straightforward — your number doesn't change. The process:
Automatic Conversion (SIM-to-eSIM)
Newer iPhones (iOS 16+) and Samsung flagships support SIM-to-eSIM transfer — the physical SIM converts to eSIM with a few taps in Settings. No QR code needed. The old nano SIM deactivates automatically.
Via Store Visit
Visit a Cosmote/Vodafone/Nova store with your ID. Request eSIM conversion. They'll give you a QR code on a printed card. Scan it on your phone. Free at every carrier.
Via App / Online
All three carriers support online conversion through their apps. Verification via SMS OTP, digital signature, or video call. QR code sent via email or push notification.
After conversion, the physical SIM card stops working. You cannot have the same number on both physical and eSIM simultaneously. If you want to go back to a physical SIM, revisit the store.
🌍 eSIM for Travel — A Game Changer
One of eSIM's biggest advantages is travel. Instead of buying a local SIM in every country or paying expensive roaming fees, you can purchase an eSIM data plan online before you leave.
🌍 Popular eSIM Travel Providers
| Provider | Coverage | Price (e.g. 5GB / 7 days) | Highlight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airalo | 200+ countries | ~€5-8 | Largest variety of plans |
| Holafly | 170+ countries | ~€6-10 | Unlimited data plans |
| Nomad | 100+ countries | ~€4-7 | Very low prices |
| eSIM.me | Variable | Varies | Adapter for non-eSIM devices |
The process is remarkably simple: download the app (e.g., Airalo), select country/plan, pay, scan QR — and you have local data before you even land. Keep your Greek number active for calls/SMS, and use the travel eSIM just for internet.
🔮 The Future: iSIM & What's Coming
The next generation after eSIM is called iSIM (integrated SIM). Instead of a separate chip, the SIM is integrated directly into the device's main processor (SoC). Advantages: even smaller size, lower power consumption, enhanced security.
Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Samsung already have iSIM-ready chipsets. The first commercial smartphones with iSIM are expected in 2026-2027. The transition from eSIM to iSIM will be invisible to users — same process, same experience, more efficient hardware.
📌 Summary — eSIM in Greece 2026

- Vodafone: Excellent app, fast online activation
- Nova: Basic eSIM support, limited prepaid
- Conversion: Always free at every carrier
